Summing up 2013: interview with 65 Gb Software

Together with our industry colleagues, we continue to summarize the results of 2013. This article contains an interview with 65 Gb Software.

What event/trend would you call the key event in the outgoing year in the mobile applications and games industry?

In my opinion, one of the trends that were outlined earlier and consolidated in the past year deserves attention — namely, the final arrival of midcore on mobile platforms, including porting large projects from PC platforms to mobile ones (Shadowrun Returns, XCOM: Enemy Unknown). For the AAA game to be released on the mobile platform in an almost original form a couple of months after its release (I mean XCOM) is an objectively phenomenal event.

What would you call the main event for your company this year?

A lot of interesting things have happened in the mobile industry this year, which somehow affected us in terms of development. From the very beginning - the output of Unity 4.3 with support for two—dimensional graphics and Box2D integrations. And at the same box office — the release of Project Anarchy, a competitive Unity.

But still, the key event of the year for us is the release of iOS 7. In particular, in light of the fact that we have decided to prioritize the custom development of non-gaming projects, where the platform guidelines are much more tangible than in games.

Please name one or two games (not from your company) that you can call the best projects on mobile platforms based on the results of the outgoing year.

From what I remember, in addition to the best-projects-for-pumping-money-out-of-the-user, such as Real Racing, I will probably name Badland. Very interesting graphic style, excellent atmosphere. Well, the devil is in the details — simple controls, short sessions, clearly animated characters.

Another time killer is Plague Inc. The very idea of growing a bacterium, virus or parasite capable of killing people all over the world is, at first glance, another delusion of apocalypse fans. In fact, it is a stunningly interesting and very, very cool game. At the same time, the gameplay is simple and intuitive, again, short sessions, a lot of game goals, well, it's not so easy to kill everyone. In general, it is ideal for a mobile platform.
