Mobile games started earning more than console games

App Annie and IDC claim that mobile games have overtaken portable console games in terms of user spending in the first quarter. It also turned out that there are 1.1 billion smartphone users and 160 million tablet users in the world.

Analytical companies have presented a joint report on portable games for the second time. This time it covers the 4th quarter of 2012 – the 1st quarter of 2013. In fact, six months. The report describes the situation that has developed both in general with the mobile market, and directly with the market of games for mobile devices and portable consoles. According to him: 

  • Android increased its share by 1.8 points
  • BlackBerry and Windows devices are responsible for most of the “other” devices
  • the number of smartphone users by the end of the first quarter of 2013 increased to 1.1 billion
  • the user base of tablets in the world has grown to 160 million 

  • games still dominate the app stores
  • games in both stores are responsible for 40% of downloads
  • in Google Play, the ratio of the cost of games to the cost of other applications is greater than in the App Store
  • these graphs take into account all smartphones, tablets, and in the case of iOS and iPod touch

Results:

  • user spending on mobile games was almost three times more than spending on portable console games in the first quarter of 2013
  • both in terms of downloads and revenue, the share of games in the mobile market continues to grow
  • User spending on games is especially high in the Asia-Pacific region, if we are talking about Google Play and portable consoles
