The author of Monkey Island makes Match 3 for iOS
The author of Monkey Island Ron Gilbert returned to the pirate theme in his first mobile game with a very long title Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG.
He told about the project and its history in his blog Grumpy Gamer. The idea to make Match 3 came to Gilbert a long time ago. This is, by and large, one of his favorite genres. Gilbert even admits that no matter what engine he tested, in the end, he always gets Match 3.
You make a game, and it, op, turns out to be Match 3
And a few years ago, he and Clayton, his old friend from his work at Cavedog Entertainment, took up the creation of Realms of Gold, a role-playing game with a three-in-a-row action game.
However, when they offered an almost ready-made project to the publisher, he told them that no one needed an RPG with Match 3. As a result, I had to cut out all the role-playing elements. And a year later, Gibert notes bitterly, Puzzle Quest was released.
Such Realms of Gold has reached the release
So in their new project, Gilbert and Clayton decided to go back, so to speak, to the roots and create the game of their dreams: musical Match 3-RPG for mobile platforms.
The main difference between the project and similar games is the original combat system. As a rule, in normal combat Match 3, damage to an opponent is inflicted either when certain game chips (for example, skulls or swords) are arranged in a row, or when spells are cast after collecting chips of a certain color.
Scurvy Scallywags has an interesting battle mode
In Scurvy Scallywags, everything is completely different.
The main character, like his opponent, is together with the chips on the playing field. In order to strike, it is necessary to be close to the enemy. As Gilbert says, it gives the game depth. The author of Monkey Island also promises a sea of content: hundreds, hats, shirts, trousers and everything else that a real pirate might need. Plus, ten types of ships and a bunch of taverns where they sing rollicking pirate songs.
The game will be released on iOS next month.
