iOS games have become 42% heavier over the past six months

Apple’s decision to increase the limit on cellular downloads from 20 to 50 megabytes has led to significant changes in the size of gaming applications in the App Store.

According to ABI Research, from March to September, the average size of the game for the iOS platform increased by 42% to 60 megabytes. This was influenced by two factors: an increase in the download limit and massive upgrades of projects for Retina tablet screens. For comparison, the average size of all applications as a whole has grown by only 16% over the same period.

The increase in the download limit when using 3G and 4G connections from 20 to 50 megabytes, according to one of ABI’s leading analysts, Aapo Markkanen, has freed the hands of developers: “now developers have the opportunity to release more complex and graphically perfect games that get all the benefits of “immediate” downloads.

At the same time, the ABI notes that increasing the download size limit not only allows developers to create more sophisticated applications, but also stiffens competition in the market. Now users with devices with a small amount of internal memory are more attentive to the applications they download. The large size of the application is now another reason not to download it or erase it to free up space.
