Catapult King on the crest of success

Catapult King, a new game from Chillingo, topped the American top paid iPad apps on the third day after its release, displacing such old-timers as Angry Birds Space HD and Where’s My Water? 

This spring, before the announcement of Angry Birds Space, there were those who were waiting for a three-dimensional version of “angry birds” from Rovio. Apparently, among them were the developers from Wicked Witch Software, who released the original Catapult King title on June 7 under the auspices of Chillingo, clearly inspired by the Finnish blockbuster.

The task of the player in Catapult King is to destroy with the help of a catapult all the castles that stand in the way of the princess, who is held captive by a dragon. There are guards in every castle, so the main goal is not so much to destroy as to knock them out of their homes. The locks themselves, despite the big name, are conventional constructions made of boards. 

In general, the game could already be safely recorded in clones and scrapped, if not for one “but”: the game is completely three-dimensional. Accordingly, with seemingly the same rules, the sensations are completely different. And there are, let’s say, much more opportunities for maneuvers. The catapult, for example, can be shifted slightly to the right and left, adjusting the angle of the future shot.

On the other hand, it is difficult to get rid of the idea that you are playing the same birds, only with a “view from the eyes”. Perhaps this, along with high–end graphics, played a role in such a rapid growth in the popularity of the game.

Catapult King also got into the American top 3 paid iPhone apps.
