Reports indicate that Sucker Punch Productions, the team behind Ghost of Yōtei, has laid off 24 of its staff. An internal communication seen by Aftermath revealed that the company opted for these workforce reductions after evaluating market challenges and the staffing requirements for upcoming projects.
A previous employee verified the layoff number, commenting on the decision's gravity as acknowledged in the internal message, which emphasized the thoughtful consideration given before taking such action. The company expressed its commitment to aiding those affected during this transition phase, acknowledging the difficulty of the situation. More details on the company's direction are expected to be shared the following week. Efforts to obtain a statement from Sony Interactive Entertainment are ongoing.
The recent title Ghost of Yōtei, which follows the 2020 hit Ghost of Tsushima, was launched last October and achieved initial sales of 3.3 million copies in its debut month, outperforming Tsushima's initial sales. Based on GSD statistics, Yōtei marked Sony's most significant first-party PlayStation release in Europe, substantially influencing Sony's third-quarter financial outcomes by pushing digital and additional content revenue up 6% to reach $4.8 billion.
Sucker Punch has maintained support for Yōtei by adding new elements to the game. In March, they introduced a multiplayer mode, and more recently, they launched a complete edition featuring a new single-player story expansion.
