Richard "Levelord" Gray, a renowned level designer famous for his contributions to Duke Nukem 3D, has passed away at the age of 68.

Apogee Entertainment shared the news of his passing on social media, honoring his "legendary work on Duke Nukem 3D." The announcement was also highlighted by PC Gamer.

Gray's journey in game design began with his role in developing Duke Nukem 3D, released in 1996. He later left 3D Realms and co-founded Hipnotic Interactive, which eventually became known as Ritual Entertainment.

During his time at Ritual, Gray contributed to notable titles like Quake: Scourge of Armagon, Sin, Star Trek: Elite Force 2, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, and 25 to Life. He also gained recognition for the Easter egg "You're not supposed to be here" in Duke Nukem 3D, accessible only through cheats.

Scott Miller, founder of Apogee, revealed to PC Gamer that he recruited Gray in 1994, impressed by his work on Doom levels.

The gaming industry mourned his loss, with Cliff Bleszinski, creator of Gears of War, acknowledging Gray's influence on level and environment design. Frederik Schreiber, CEO of Slipgate Ironworks, remembered Gray as "one of the kindest people" he had met in the industry.

The cause of Gray's death has not been disclosed.
