Grasshopper Manufacture declares its independence following a separation from NetEase Games

The video game studio Grasshopper Manufacture, known for creating "Romeo is a Dead Man," has announced its independence from NetEase Games, resuming operations as a standalone company.
According to a statement by CEO Goichi 'Suda51' Suda, the successful release of "Romeo is a Dead Man" earlier this year prompted the studio to evaluate its trajectory. "We've realized a strong aspiration to offer games in a broader array of styles to enthusiasts across the globe," Suda expressed. "Thus, Grasshopper Manufacture has opted to proceed as an independent developer again."
The exact reasons for this strategic shift were thoroughly discussed with NetEase Games, and Suda acknowledged their supportive role. "We treasure the remarkable partnership we've had with NetEase and anticipate future engagements as opportunities present themselves," he remarked.
Suda also highlighted that the studio has significantly enhanced its self-publishing expertise, providing various possibilities for its future projects. Regardless of publication methods, presenting unique gaming experiences—typified by the slogan 'NO GAME NO LIFE'—remains the company’s fundamental goal, likely to be complemented by their distinct style and improved game quality.
NetEase acquired Grasshopper Manufacture in 2021, following its tenure under GungHo Online Entertainment since 2013. Founded in 1998 by Suda, the studio is celebrated for titles like the No More Heroes series, Killer7, and Shadows of the Damned.
