Sony will not attend CES 2027, marking the first time the company will miss the expo since it began in 1967

Sony has announced its decision to skip the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 2027, the first absence since the inauguration of the event in 1967. While the company did not set up a booth at CES this year, Sony showcased its collaboration with Honda by featuring the Afeela electric vehicle.

A company representative explained to Bloomberg that Sony's decision is rooted in a strategic focus on sectors like entertainment and technology that aid content creators. "We are constantly reassessing our engagement with events and communication in line with specific business priorities," the spokesperson remarked.

In previous years, Sony was known for delivering keynote speeches during CES that often included announcements about PlayStation developments. Notably, during CES 2020, former PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan introduced the logo for the PlayStation 5. Further announcements at CES 2022 included details on the PlayStation VR2 and the game Horizon: Call of the Mountain.

Recently, Sony has generally opted out of in-person participation at gaming conventions, including a noticeable absence from last month's Gamescom.

This year, Gamescom saw its exhibition spaces entirely filled, highlighting increased interest from exhibitors. In contrast, Sony has not made an appearance at the event since 2019, choosing instead to engage audiences through online events like its State of Play series.

On the other hand, competitors such as Nintendo and Xbox made a considerable impact at Gamescom. Nintendo, for instance, set up multiple exhibit areas, including a stage and interactive game zones.
