The developer Build A Rocket Boy, known for the game MindsEye, has turned to administrators amidst a fresh round of job cuts. Opus Advisory Group has stepped in as the administrator according to confirmation to GamesIndustry.biz. The appointment suggests financial insolvency, shielding the studio from creditor claims.

Build A Rocket Boy's recent financial statements, covering up to September 2025, disclose an operating loss of £47.5 million and a net loss of £36.2 million, with total liabilities reaching £61.8 million. Investment in the studio has previously come from entities including NetEase Games, RedBird Capital Partners, and Galaxy Interactive. However, their board representatives were let go during the summer of 2026.

The company's founder, Leslie Benzies, established Build A Rocket Boy in 2016, aiming to create innovative gaming experiences. MindsEye, launched in June 2025, faced criticism and unfavorably low consumer ratings, which eventually led to redundancy risks for about 300 employees. The IWGB Game Workers union initiated legal action against the studio in late 2025, citing mishandling of the layoffs.

Amidst rising tensions, early 2026 saw the installation of Teramind monitoring software on workplace computers without prior notice, which brought additional legal action over data privacy concerns. Allegations of extensive sabotage by an unspecified major American corporation, purported by co-CEO Leslie Benzies and unsupported claims by co-CEO Mark Gerhard, heightened the situation.

In March 2026, allegations of organized espionage against the studio were repeated as it continued to lay off employees. Following the latest redundancies in September 2026, the company still strived for improvements, releasing the Blacklisted update in April 2026, which Gerhard described as significant for both the studio and MindsEye.

In discussions with GamesIndustry.biz, the prospects for Build A Rocket Boy's revival seemed bleak to staff. A former employee expressed doubt about the studio's future, attributing its struggles not to external factors but to decisions by Benzies and Gerhard.
