Sony has patented a gamepad with a payment terminal
Sony Corporation recently obtained a new patent. It has legally formalized a technology that allows the DualSense controller to be used as a payment terminal for purchases on PlayStation consoles.
According to the patent description, discovered by Patentlyze, when attempting to make a purchase, Sony console owners will no longer have to manually enter card details. Instead, they will simply need to bring their smartphone close to the controller, after which a payment confirmation request will appear on their mobile device screen.
The technology is expected to speed up the process of purchasing games and other items in the PlayStation Store, so it takes as little time as possible for gamers. Whether it can work not only on consoles but also, for instance, on a PC if the controller is connected to it, remains unclear.
As with many patents, there is no guarantee that the technology will ever come to fruition. Even if Sony decides to implement it, the working principle might change.
