Bungie has declared its continued commitment to "Destiny," expressing a goal to regain the confidence of players by reinstating previously archived "Destiny 2" content

Destiny 2 is set to see the return of its vaulted campaigns, raids, and destinations, as Bungie aims to rebuild the trust of its player base. This revelation comes three months after the game's concluding update.

In a recent blog entry, Poria Torkan, the studio head, and Josh Deane, who oversees product and serves as general manager of Marathon, emphasized Destiny's significance for Bungie's future, stating the team has more narratives to explore and new settings to create.

Previously this year, Bungie announced it was halting Destiny 2's development, leading to layoffs affecting 292 staff members.

Torkan addressed the repercussions in a video on Bungie’s YouTube channel, saying, "We lost trust. We lost incredible colleagues. And our ambitions as a studio stalled. We chased vision without enough focus on what players loved, and that's on us. We own that."

The pair acknowledged the discontent from players following the development halt and content removal. Since 2020, particular content from Destiny 2 was archived to focus on future expansions. Deane admitted these elements shouldn't have been removed, saying, they were integral to the gamer experience and highlighted the shared adventures.

Reintroducing content is not a straightforward task. Changes implemented post-Beyond Light necessitate updates to various game systems to ensure they align with current standards.

Updates were also provided regarding Marathon, a title which has not yet reached its desired audience. Bungie reiterated that Marathon is pivotal for its upcoming direction but was never meant to be Destiny's substitute.

Deane has revealed plans to transform Marathon beyond its current genre limitations into a more immersive survival game, aiming to give players greater freedom by the end of its first year.

Bungie’s Future Plans

To regain player confidence, four main goals have been set:

  • Develop a lasting legacy for Destiny, respecting and bringing back its history
  • Advance Marathon to expand the community and ensure sustainability
  • Enhance openness about developmental focus
  • Improve communication, especially regarding changes in plans

Torkan acknowledged past commitments and the understandable skepticism from the community. She noted, "Rebuilding trust is going to take time. And we're not going to do it with words. We're going to do it through the games that we make and how we show up for our players. We still have hard work ahead of us to build a Bungie that is healthy, sustainable, and able to be around for a long time, but we believe deeply in the studio, the people here, and the games we are building. Now, we have to prove it."
