"It's a horror for the next generation of humanity": Epic Games CEO on the risk of restricting children's access to online games in the EU

On September 16, the European Commission officially unveiled a draft law called the EU Kids Act, which could make it more difficult for European minors to access online games. The initiative was immediately criticized by Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney.

Sweeney shared his thoughts on this matter on X. He dramatically stated that the draft law potentially threatens the future of humanity, as it deprives children not only of entertainment but also of the opportunity to create—since some online games feature UGC (User-Generated Content) options.

“Today, apps and games play the same role as paintbrushes and treehouses did in the past. Fortnite has Creative Mode; Roblox has Roblox Studio. Everyone can become a digital content creator, as long as politicians don't take this opportunity away from us," wrote the head of Epic Games.

It is anticipated that the EU Kids Act aims to enhance the safety of children online. First and foremost, the draft law is intended to limit the presence of young users on social media, but it also introduces barriers for children in online games, video services, and several other platforms. If passed, children will not be able to create their own accounts until they turn 15.
