Polyarc Games, the developer behind Moss, has announced its closure
Polyarc Games, known for the Moss series, is closing its doors after more than a decade in business.
The Seattle-based company's decision to cease operations was disclosed via a post on LinkedIn, where they stated they are "winding down active development."
They expressed, "After nearly 12 years of experiencing the ups and downs of game development, our journey together has concluded."
In response to the closure, Polyarc provided a recruitment spreadsheet to support the staff impacted by the announcement.
"Collaborating over these years has been a privilege. Entertaining and surprising gamers has been an honor. Thanks to everyone at Polyarc, our work is now complete."
GamesIndustry.biz has contacted the studio for more details regarding the shutdown.
This announcement comes shortly after the release of Moss: The Forgotten Relic, which combined the two original games outside of virtual reality, launched two months ago.
Earlier in the year, Polyarc had to let go of 30 staff members due to unsuccessful attempts to secure funding following a significant project cancellation.
Established in 2015 by former Bungie developers Tam Armstrong, Danny Bulla, and Chris Alderson, Polyarc made its mark with the 2018 release of the VR puzzle adventure, Moss. A sequel followed in 2022, and last year they introduced the online competitive VR strategy title, Glassbreakers: Champions of Moss.
The developer secured $3.5 million in 2016 to create Moss and further obtained $9 million in 2020 to pursue augmented reality projects.
In a 2021 discussion with GamesIndustry.biz, Lincoln Davis, Polyarc's director of publishing and communications, mentioned exploring AR to adapt to evolving market conditions.
"Our early collaboration with PlayStation on Moss introduced a unique gaming experience. Embracing new technologies and enhancing them with Polyarc’s distinctive quality would advance our studio," he added.
