During an exclusive six-hour preview window on Netflix, GTA 6 attracted over 100,000 sign-ups
The debut of Grand Theft Auto 6's preview on Netflix drew over 100,000 new users in the United States during a six-hour exclusive period on August 27, 2026. This made it the platform's third most significant subscriber increase of the year, as reported by Ampere Analysis.
This increase in subscribers was only surpassed by the last episode of Stranger Things and the Rousey vs. Carano MMA event. Despite this, it still outperformed most live sports programs on Netflix in 2026.
The data also showed that more than 5% of viewers, who had not accessed Netflix for a month, were reactivated to watch the preview and went on to consume additional content. This reactivation was notably higher than for any other Netflix series or film in the same timeframe.
Within just four days, the extended GTA 6 preview recorded 31.1 million views on Netflix. Furthermore, Sensor Tower reported that mobile viewership in the US surged by 35% and web traffic by 125% during the preview.
In the UK, the preview led to a notable 33% and 34% boost in PlayStation and Xbox sales, respectively, based on data from Nielsen IQ.
Despite its focus on mobile games, Netflix demonstrates its ability to engage large gaming audiences through exclusive sneak peeks and franchise adaptations like those of Cyberpunk and The Witcher.
Projections by Ampere estimate that Netflix's global subscriber base will reach approximately 343 million by late 2026, with about 16% not participating in gaming activities.
Katie Holt, Ampere Analysis senior research analyst, commented, "Though Netflix can't rival the largest AAA game franchises directly, it competes effectively for the surrounding interest with trailers, reveals, and adaptation content." She emphasized, "GTA 6 exemplifies this dynamic due to its vast scale and the heightened anticipation of its release."
Louise Wooldridge, a senior research manager, noted, "Over 100,000 new sign-ups from merely six hours underscore the significant draw of a major video game event." She added, "It's a strategy for Netflix to challenge YouTube for gamer viewership while enticing previous viewers back. For Rockstar, it extends GTA 6’s reach beyond its usual audience base through Netflix."
