FuturLab reduces workforce following termination of a project unrelated to Powerwash Simulator

Seven members of FuturLab's team have been laid off following the termination of a project not connected to PowerWash Simulator. The company's CEO, Kirsty Rigden, mentioned that the project was stopped during its early stages as its financial viability was questionable and continuing would not have been advantageous.
Rigden assured that FuturLab is focused on creating an outstanding PowerWash Simulator 2 and exploring new gaming concepts. The decision to address future studio needs and plans began with assessing the cancellation impacts.
Rigden emphasized the difficulty of the decision, noting it affected individuals with considerable talents who had long tenures at the company. The choice, though tough, is seen as a protective step for FuturLab's future.
When probed about whether the employees were made redundant, Rigden cited confidentiality and legal constraints that prevented further disclosure.
Reports suggest that the project cancellation was communicated in late June, after two to three years of work. Some team members allegedly experienced a lack of direction post-cancellation. By July, the seven impacted employees reportedly faced redundancy, without preliminary alerts to their direct supervisors.
In August, according to sources, FuturLab COO Chris Mehers indicated the studio was reorganizing. In follow-up instructions, staff were advised to avoid the term "redundancy," describing the affected individuals as "leavers" instead.
Further guidance to employees clarified that those departing were not essential for PowerWash Simulator 2, thus their exit would not disrupt game progress. Additionally, the managers didn't partake in selection decisions, aiming to shield them from associated stresses.
Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Rigden had previously discussed upcoming ventures, highlighting FuturLab's desire to diversify beyond PowerWash Simulator. The studio is continuously looking for new opportunities alongside their hallmark projects.
