Capcom has disclosed plans to revitalize its older franchises after the successful debut of Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

Marking the first primary release in over twenty years, Way of the Sword launched on September 4, achieving sales of over one million copies globally on its first day. This achievement propelled the Onimusha series to exceed 10 million units in total sales since its inception in 2001.

The company noted that pre-launch demos and community play sessions significantly boosted interest among diverse gaming audiences.

Capcom expressed its commitment to reviving inactive IPs alongside the yearly release of major new games, aiming to "further maximize corporate value" by leveraging its legacy titles. More details are available in the company's statement.

This strategic focus on older IPs was echoed in a December 2024 disclosure to investors and aligns with long-term objectives outlined since 2019.

The game, Way of the Sword, set in Edo-period Kyoto featuring Miyamoto Musashi, is now available on platforms like Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
