Nexus Mods has become the owner of SteamDB
Both platforms have announced that the analytic service SteamDB has joined forces with the game modding site Nexus Mods.
Details about the deal itself are not available. Whether it was an actual purchase, what the financial terms were, the conditions of the merger, and other specifics remain unknown.
However, the reasons behind this merger have been disclosed.
SteamDB was launched in 2013 by two programmers under the aliases Marlamin and xPaw. Over time, the first one stepped back, and for more than a decade, all the work on the development and maintenance of the service rested solely on the latter.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, xPaw began to experience burnout and search for someone who could help. Unfortunately, at that time, he couldn't find a team he could trust. Therefore, he had to continue working on the resource alone.
However, the burnout persisted and the workload only increased. Thus, in January 2026, he once again actively sought a company that could ensure the preservation of his legacy. It is implied that xPaw even considered shutting down the resource altogether.
It is expected that following the deal, Nexus Mods will actively invest in the project with a "cross-functional team featuring modern infrastructure, enhanced security, and scalability potential."
Additionally, Nexus Mods plans to integrate SteamDB data with modding tools and mod metadata. "This will enable the mod manager to identify which game build a user has installed, warn them before updates that could break modifications, and significantly more reliably install collections and mod lists," as stated in the deal's FAQ.
The FAQ further specifies that the ability to use SteamDB data to improve Nexus Mods is one of the main reasons for the merger.
Over time, there are plans to transition SteamDB to a commercial basis. However, the new owner assures that there will be no paid subscription for existing features, nor will there be the sale of personal data. The resource will remain free for use, although some new functionality may require payment.
SteamDB will continue to exist as an analytic system. It will not become a section on Nexus Mods. Additionally, the new owner did not rule out the possibility of the platform having its own API, which is very important.
