In just four days, the extended look at GTA 6 amassed 31.1 million views on Netflix, securing its position as the most-watched title of the week
The extended preview of Grand Theft Auto 6 emerged as Netflix's top-viewed title last week, amassing 31.1 million views within just four days. This viewing period extended from its debut on Thursday, August 27, until Sunday, August 30, marking the conclusion of Netflix's weekly Top 10 chart monitoring.
The preview, which runs for 30 minutes, led the English-language film category in 87 out of the 93 countries tracked, surpassing "The Whisper Man," a crime thriller featuring Robert De Niro and Adam Scott. Initially, the premiere was a Netflix exclusive for six hours before it was released on YouTube, where the video on Rockstar Games' channel has since garnered 17 million views.
As reported by Variety, Netflix’s definition of a view involves calculating the total hours a title is watched, divided by its runtime. This means that if one household watches the program twice, it is counted as a single view. On YouTube, however, a view is recorded as soon as the video starts to play.
Data from Sensor Tower revealed that during this extended preview event, mobile viewership for Netflix in the US experienced a 35% increase hour-over-hour. The number of mobile users climbed by 50% compared to the average over the past 12 weeks in the same timeframe. Moreover, the surge in web traffic, which increased by 125%, led to a temporary crash of the streaming platform.
Take-Two Interactive's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, mentioned to GamesIndustry.biz that this Netflix premiere serves as "one of the hors d'oeuvres" in their marketing efforts for Grand Theft Auto 6, which is set to be released on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
