The recent preview of Grand Theft Auto 6 emerged as Netflix's most-watched title last week, garnering 31.1 million views in just four days. According to Variety, this viewership data was gathered from the premiere on Thursday (August 27) until Sunday (August 30), aligning with the end of Netflix's weekly Top 10 window.
Appearing for 30 minutes, the preview topped Netflix’s English-language movie list in 87 out of the 93 countries tracked, outperforming The Whisper Man featuring Robert De Niro and Adam Scott. Initially, the premiere was available solely on Netflix for six hours before being released on YouTube, where it has since amassed 17 million views on Rockstar Games’ channel.
Variety clarifies that Netflix's definition of a view involves the total hours watched divided by the runtime, implying that repeated views by the same household count as one. Conversely, YouTube considers a view when a video starts playing.
Data from Sensor Tower revealed a 35% increase in Netflix's mobile viewership in the US during the extended preview. This period also saw a 50% spike in mobile users, compared to the 12-week average, and a 125% surge in web traffic, which led to a temporary service disruption.
In a conversation with GamesIndustry.biz, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick described the Netflix premiere as merely a "starter" in the promotional efforts for the game, which is set for a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release on November 19.
