Cloud Imperium has postponed the release of Squadron 42 to 2027, citing a desire to avoid competing with the anticipated launch frenzy surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6.

The anticipated release date for "Squadron 42," a spin-off of "Star Citizen," has been delayed to the second quarter of 2027. This decision aims to steer clear of coinciding with the release of "Grand Theft Auto 6," according to Cloud Imperium Games' CEO and co-founder, Chris Roberts.

Roberts highlighted the necessity for the game to capture the full attention of the gaming community, stating, "We have poured countless efforts since starting 'Squadron 42' in 2014, and don't wish to compete directly with 'GTA 6' in the media's spotlight."

The game boasts a notable lineup of actors such as Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, Andy Serkis, and Henry Cavill. A preview for a select group of original backers and dedicated "Star Citizen" content creators is slated for this October, with further release announcements to follow.

Despite the postponement, Roberts reassured fans that the delay ensures the game will receive the recognition it deserves. "Star Citizen," which began development in 2012, has amassed over $1 billion through its crowdfunding and early access models, yet still lacks a definitive release date.

Earlier comments by Cloud Imperium co-founder Sandi Roberts suggested that the game was nearing completion, stating that as the release date approaches, maintaining secrecy becomes increasingly challenging. The marketing strategy for "Squadron 42," according to Roberts, aims to appeal to a more extensive audience than "Star Citizen."

Reflecting on the enthusiasm of the community, she expressed excitement about their anticipation and involvement, which has been integral to the project's journey. "I believe the launch of 'Squadron' will be a monumental occasion for our loyal community," she said.
