An entity has secured $5.8 million in funding to develop a browser-based gaming platform that promises "console-quality" performance
A venture from Ireland called Entity has successfully secured $5.8 million in seed funding to develop a web-based gaming platform aiming to offer console-like gaming experiences without the need for downloads or installations.
According to GamesBeat, this Dublin-headquartered firm, established in 2024, intends to unveil the service by early 2027, blending existing PC and console games with new intellectual properties.
The platform utilizes WebGPU and WebAssembly technology, allowing users to access games or join multiplayer sessions via a simple link, differentiating itself from cloud gaming by eliminating remote server streaming and associated lag.
The funding round was led by ACT, Delta Partners, and Elkstone, with additional backing from Enterprise Ireland and several angel investors in the gaming industry.
Rich Barnwell, Kev Bergin, Dave McGovern, Fergus Duggan, and Artur Stawiarski, who previously established Digit—creators of Star Trek Fleet Command, acquired by Scopely in 2019—founded Entity. Paul Farley, leading the games division at Entity, founded companies such as Firestoke, Tag Games, and ChiliConnect, which were later acquired by Scopely and Unity.
Entity's CEO and founder, Rich Barnwell, stated, "In this 'new web' era, the traditional methods of game creation, discovery, and play are transforming, necessitating a novel platform." He highlighted that the industry has long been hampered by the need for burdensome downloads and unnecessary limitations. Barnwell emphasized, "Entity introduces the platform suited for today's gamers, delivering console-quality experiences instantaneously on any device. The support from our new investors and experienced angels empowers Entity to revolutionize the gaming console experience."
