A hacker group named "CyberLeek" has been consistently leaking what seems to be gameplay footage and details from a build of Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6. The leaked content includes game mechanics, assets, and a complete map.
According to a report from IGN, CyberLeek is using these leaks to promote a new type of digital currency. Although the authenticity of these materials hasn’t been verified, the group claims to release new footage each day. The origins and timeframe of the leaked content remain unknown.
Rockstar along with its parent company Take-Two Interactive is reportedly making efforts to take down the leaked videos from social media platforms. The group started releasing leaks recently, with more appearing over the last few days. A recent video seems to show footage from a playable version of the game where a character named Jason Duval is seen spelling out "LEEK" with bullet holes on a wall.
CyberLeek has also issued a call for Rockstar to review its alleged plans for an all-digital release of GTA 6, calling for changes including options for physical copies and the removal of monetized single-player features. They have made threats against other gaming publishers, warning, "If CyberLeek can reach Rockstar, no one is safe."
The outlet GamesIndustry.biz reached out to Take-Two for their comments on the situation. This event echoes a similar incident from September 2022 when Rockstar experienced a significant leak of 90 developmental videos for GTA 6 before the formal announcement. That incident led to an investigation by the FBI after Take-Two began removing the leaked content from YouTube, which seemed to confirm its legitimacy.
Later, in December 2023, a trailer for the game surfaced online a day ahead of its intended release, pushing Rockstar to publish the official preview sooner than planned on YouTube. Additionally, earlier this year, Rockstar was affected by a third-party data breach where limited non-material information was accessed by hackers.
Currently, the most recent leaks appear just a week before an extended gameplay reveal of GTA 6 scheduled on Netflix on August 27. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, described this collaboration as just a beginning in their larger marketing efforts, referring to it as “one of the hors d'oeuvres.” He praised Netflix as an excellent partner for marketing and distribution, highlighting the novelty of the partnership orchestrated by Rockstar.
