Warren Spector, the creator of Deus Ex, has announced his retirement, stating, "it's time to ride off into the sunset"
After an impressive career spanning over four decades, Warren Spector, renowned for creating Deus Ex, has decided to retire from the gaming industry.
Spector revealed his retirement plans on LinkedIn, expressing confidence in his decision, despite previous instances where he reconsidered. "I am approaching my 44th year as a developer," he stated. "I've had the opportunity to work on various types of games, from tabletop to board games, and over 17 digital games, including approximately nine expansion packs."
His journey began at Origin Systems in 1989, where he co-produced notable titles like Ultima 6 and Wing Commander. Spector later spearheaded the Deus Ex series at Ion Storm, was involved with the Thief series, contributed to Ultima Underworld at Looking Glass, and launched Junction Point Studios, known for Epic Mickey.
In 2016, Spector joined OtherSide Entertainment, where he took part in developing System Shock 3 and Underworld Ascendant.
"Remarkably, some of these games are still played 15, 20, even 30 years later," Spector mentioned. "I've worked in influential genres, led teams ranging from a dozen to 800 people, and collaborated with both major companies and startups. Supporting talented individuals in their careers has been particularly rewarding," he added.
Spector reflected that, with age and changing health issues, it feels like the right moment to retire. He plans to focus on writing books, reading, lecturing, and potentially consulting.
He expressed mixed emotions regarding his retirement, noting industry changes and a waning passion as factors. Spector also recognized the emergence of new developers deserving recognition.
"Remember, gaming is not a solved problem yet. There is room for experimentation and innovation. For the young developers, as I've often said, your job is to make people forget about veterans like me," Spector advised.
"Will I return? It's uncertain, but it seems time to move on."
