2K launches Small Axe Studios, a new AAA sports game developer
2K has introduced Small Axe Studios, a top-tier game development team headquartered in Vancouver, Canada.
Directed by Aaron McHardy, the studio is a part of 2K's endeavor to launch a new sports series, and they are actively onboarding for essential roles.
McHardy, who holds the titles of head of studio, vice president, and executive producer, leads a seasoned leadership team that features prominent members such as Gary Paterson (design lead), Tom Pan (operations lead), Mike Thompson (engineering lead), Brent Breedveld (animation director), Karl Gryc (art director), John Cruz (technical art director), and Trisha MacWan (HR lead).
Prior to this role, McHardy spent 15 years overseeing the EA Sports FIFA team, until 2021. Additionally, Paterson, Pan, Thompson, and Cruz are other notable EA Sports alumni now part of this venture.
Small Axe emerged from 2K Sports Lab, initiated in 2023 to pioneer research and development for future sports-related interactive entertainment.
"The studio embodies the dynamic spirit of a startup united with 2K's capabilities, aiming to revolutionize sports gaming," stated 2K.
"Drawing from our successful experiences with major franchises like NBA 2K, WWE 2K, and PGA Tour 2K, Small Axe Studios is well-positioned to make significant strides in this domain."
McHardy further commented: "Our studio is set to tackle the industry's most ambitious goals. Our name signifies that ambition: with the right vision, determination, and precision, a small axe can topple a giant tree."
"I feel immense pride in the team we've built so far and am eager about what the future holds."
