Sony expects to receive half a billion dollars in compensation for tariffs in the US—70% of that amount has already been collected
During a recent teleconference with investors and analysts, Sony addressed the topic of additional tariffs it had paid in the US before they were canceled. This was noted by journalist Stephen Totilo from Game File.

As reported by Sony, earlier this year, the company requested a refund from US authorities for the paid tariffs. Altogether, the company hopes to receive compensations amounting to 80 billion yen, or approximately 508 million dollars. Notably, the “majority” of these compensations is expected to go to its gaming division, though the exact amount is not specified.
The forecast is gradually coming to fruition. Sony noted that 70% of the total — around 56 billion yen or 356 million dollars — was refunded by US authorities between April and June 2026.
Previously, Sony also reported that the tariff refunds were a key driver of PlayStation's quarterly profit growth. As a reminder, for the period of April to June 2026, the gaming division achieved a profit of 202 billion yen (1.26 billion dollars), which is a 37% increase compared to 2025.
In light of the tariffs, Sony announced last year a price increase for the PlayStation 5 in the US: the base version of the console rose to 550 dollars, while the Pro version increased to 750 dollars. In April 2026, the company hiked the prices again globally — to 650 and 900 dollars respectively. This ultimately sparked discontent among the audience, and in May, two American gamers filed a lawsuit against Sony, accusing it of trying to profit from tariffs. Sony is expected to respond to the lawsuit by the end of the summer.
