Lightspeed LA, the developer behind "Last Sentinel," has reportedly reduced its workforce by cutting 80 positions
Tencent subsidiary Lightspeed LA recently implemented job cuts as part of a strategic change in the creative and development approach for its forthcoming game, Last Sentinel.
According to a Bloomberg report, 80 staff members were impacted by the layoffs.
The studio acknowledged in a statement that while some positions would be impacted by these changes, it "continues its operations and development efforts." The company emphasized its commitment to treating those affected with care, offering comprehensive support, and exploring possibilities for internal transfers.
Lightspeed LA reaffirmed its dedication to its North American operations, stating that the region remains a significant part of its worldwide gaming strategy, and expressed plans to keep investing in regional talent and expertise. The studio, launched in 2020 and based in Irvine, California, operates under the direction of industry veteran Steve Martin and is a part of Shenzhen's Lightspeed Studios.
Initially revealed at The Game Awards in 2023, Last Sentinel has reportedly been under development for six years, with multiple delays and a substantial budget purportedly reaching into the hundreds of millions, as noted by Bloomberg sources. The publication further noted that Tencent has seemingly opted not to continue with the project.
Despite these developments, Lightspeed LA assured through a IGN statement that updates on the game's development will be shared when available, clarifying that no release date has been officially set as of yet.
