New research highlights that the key to success for player-versus-player first-person shooter games isn't the total viewing hours, but rather how many creators and streamers are active shortly after the game's release.

An analysis from the marketing company Gamesight emphasizes that by the third day following a launch, the volume of content creators is a strong indicator of the game's enduring popularity on Twitch.

Gamesight investigated 25 different launches, covering both well-known series and newer titles, determining that PvP FPS games exhibit the most staying power among shooter subgenres.

This consistency is attributed to elements such as replay value, diverse match experiences, evolving competition, promotional passes, and organized competitions.

Gamesight categorized new games like Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, and Overwatch 2, among others, into three groups: high retention (continuous long-term creator involvement), stable retention (a smaller, steady following), and low retention (announced discontinuation soon after release).

Data showed that by the third day, the number of engaged creators forecasts the retention level with 72% accuracy, which increases to 82% by the close of the first month post-launch.

The data indicates a 72% accuracy in predicting a game's retention category based on active creator numbers.

Marlie Tandoc, a data analyst at Gamesight, explained, "The regular engagement of diverse creators is a more reliable indication of a nascent community forming around a game."

"Ultimately, strategic creator initiatives, ongoing community activities, and investment after launch deliver significant benefits," Tandoc added.

She noted that while initial excitement can bring a game into the limelight, the engagement curve of active creators reveals whether the interest endures. This underscores the importance of sustained activities, creator initiatives, and community investments post-launch."

"High-profile streams can boost short-term recognition, but a wide-ranging active creator base is a more dependable indicator of continued success."
