One year following its introduction, the UK Games Growth Package is experiencing "exceptional demand"
The UK government introduced a £30 million Games Growth Package last year, and it is reportedly already benefiting the gaming industry, according to Ian Murray, UK Creative Industries Minister. This funding initiative aims to support promising game developers across the UK until 2029, giving them the opportunity to progress their careers and transform their ideas into tangible job growth and economic value.
The initiative is part of the UK's broader Industrial Strategy and Creative Industries Sector Plan. Of the total investment, £28.5 million is handled by the UK Games Fund to assist emerging developers and support the expansion of studios. An additional £1.5 million is designated for the London Games Festival over three years.
The UK Games Fund has experienced significant interest, with three main funding streams: the Starter Fund offering up to £20,000 for startups, the Prototype Fund providing up to £100,000, and the Content Fund granting up to £250,000 to facilitate completion and growth projects that involve private investment.
Kirsty Gibson, director at UK Games Talent and Finance CIC, expressed satisfaction with the strong demand for these grants, which suggests a promising future for independent game developers in the UK to bolster economic expansion.
32 gaming companies in the UK have been beneficiaries of the fund's International Business Development segment, receiving a cumulative £3.2 million through grants that can reach as much as £200,000, aimed at enhancing export operations and international revenue efforts.
Nick Poole, CEO of UKIE, remarked on the positive impact seen since the launch of the Creative Industries Sector Plan. Funding from the UK Games Fund and the UK Global Screen Fund is enabling studios to expand, innovate, and pursue their ambitions, illustrating a readiness within the sector for growth.
In May, the BFI's UK Global Screen Fund saw an increase in its annual financing, leading to the creation of a new funding stream tailored for video game releases. This segment offers up to £50,000 for developers to manage marketing, promotional, and localization expenses during game releases.
This year's London Games Festival, now receiving support from the Games Growth Package, drew crowds from around the world with over 30 events and more than 8,000 business delegates from 61 countries. Michael French, director of Head of Games London and the London Games Festival, noted the event's success in reinvigorating large-scale showcases, attracting international investments, and fostering commercial opportunities for UK-based firms.
Looking forward, the festival plans to expand further by relocating some headline events to a central venue, aiming to strengthen its status as a key international gaming showcase. This move is expected to attract more industry stakeholders and gaming enthusiasts to the UK.
