Glen Schofield declares retirement, reflecting on having had "a front row seat to one of the greatest creative explosions in history"

Glen Schofield, known for his extensive contributions to the gaming industry, has decided to retire after a career that spanned 35 years. In a video shared on LinkedIn, Schofield expressed his gratitude for his experiences over the past two decades, highlighting the incredible talent he had the privilege to work with and noting the remarkable creativity he witnessed.

Schofield extended thanks to Electronic Arts for enabling him to create Dead Space and to Activision for entrusting him with the development of three Call of Duty games. He emphasized the industry's vast pool of talented individuals, acknowledging current challenges while expressing optimism about the future of game development.

In a GamesBeat interview earlier in the year, Schofield revealed that he made the decision to retire following the completion of The Callisto Protocol, describing it as the most challenging project of his career. During this period, he engaged in painting, drawing, and sculpting, which made him reflect on his career and contemplate stepping away from daily production responsibilities.

Reflecting on his career, Schofield noted the evolving nature of the games industry, considering it the right moment for a new wave of game creators to forge their path. Besides his notable projects with Dead Space and Call of Duty, he contributed to the Gex and Legacy of Kain series. His career also included serving as VP and general manager at Visceral Games and co-founding Sledgehammer Games before establishing Striking Distance Studios as its founder and CEO.

Schofield departed from Striking Distance Studios in 2023 to explore new ventures. Earlier discussions with Schofield focused on addressing issues within the AAA gaming sector, where he underscored the importance of creativity amidst pressures to reduce development costs and workforce sizes.
