Ubisoft shifts strategy to a "selective model" to lessen dependence on single game releases

Ubisoft is shifting its business strategy from solely depending on game releases to a model that emphasizes its existing catalog and live services for income.

According to the publisher's annual report for 2025/26, this change aligns with ongoing restructuring that started earlier in the year. More details on the restructuring can be found in reports covering Ubisoft's activities.

The company has indicated that launching a game prematurely, especially when competing with major releases or updates to successful titles, can lessen its market success. Previously noted risks such as "overpricing" have now been reframed as potentially devaluing the game content through specific pricing strategies.

Current reports also identify threats to team consistency due to the restructuring initiatives, which have led to studio shutdowns and workforce reductions. This issue was highlighted as 51 employees were laid off at Ubisoft Barcelona following the launch of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced.

Ubisoft has recognized that losing critical team members could negatively affect development processes and editorial strategies, given the competitive market for talent with unique skills and creativity.

CEO Yves Guillemot characterized the past year as transformative, asserting that the company is on track to finalize its cost-saving measures by March 2028. Guillemot emphasized the necessity of these significant changes to build a more adaptable and robust organization, positioning Ubisoft to capitalize on future prospects.

Looking forward, Guillemot reiterated Ubisoft's ambition to remain a top creator of high-quality and engaging entertainment, continuing commitment to delivering notable gaming experiences.
