Reuters: Media conglomerate NBCUniversal is interested in purchasing gaming companies
Recently, Comcast Corporation announced plans to spin off its media holding NBCUniversal into a separate publicly traded company. Amidst this, rumors have surfaced that after the business split, NBCUniversal may begin to explore new strategic directions — including entering the video game market.
Reuters reports, citing three sources familiar with the situation, that NBCUniversal is considering this possibility. According to the agency, the media holding is not ruling out the purchase of game studios or publishers, but no specific deals are currently being discussed. Moreover, there are no guarantees that such deals will materialize at all. It is quite possible that NBCUniversal might decide to pursue something else instead of video games.
It's worth noting that in the past, the management of NBCUniversal — and its parent company Comcast — has repeatedly considered acquiring gaming companies. For instance, the media reported in 2022 that NBCUniversal wanted to merge with Electronic Arts. The media holding allegedly also considered acquiring Activision and a stake in Epic Games.
However, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, during a conference call with investors, denied assumptions that the separation of Comcast and NBCUniversal is a step towards any deals.
