The Main Events of the Weekend (June 20-21)
CD PROJEKT still doubts if it has regained the trust of its audience after the troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077, layoffs have occurred at Kabam, and Meccha Chameleon sales have exceeded 7 million copies — here we cover the main events in the gaming industry over the past weekend.
- Last week ended with tragic news. In France, Claude Guillemot, one of the five Guillemot brothers who founded Ubisoft, passed away. He was aboard a light aircraft, a Cessna 421, which crashed near La Baule airfield. It is reported that there was another person on the plane who also died. Claude Guillemot was 69 at the time of his death.
- The mobile publisher and developer Kabam has laid off some employees. The exact number is unknown, but the company assures that its projects will not be affected. In a comment to the Game Developer portal, a Kabam representative explained that the company recently reassessed its strategic priorities, which led to the decision to “consolidate its Los Angeles office and optimize operational activities,” ultimately leading to the layoffs.
- CD PROJEKT's joint CEO Michał Nowakowski gave an interview to EDGE magazine. During the conversation, he recalled the unsuccessful release of Cyberpunk 2077 — at launch, the game was in such poor technical condition that it was temporarily removed from sale in the PlayStation Store, and investors sued CD PROJEKT. Nowakowski admitted that the period was “heartbreaking” for the company. CD PROJEKT has always regarded its reputation as its greatest asset, but the troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077 severely damaged it. According to the top manager, six years ago, CD PROJEKT lost the trust of many people, and it has not yet been fully regained. However, Nowakowski hopes that The Witcher IV and CD PROJEKT’s subsequent projects will help atone for their mistakes.
- The cooperative hide-and-seek game Meccha Chameleon has reached a new major sales milestone. Its creator, lemorion_1224, announced that the title sold 7 million copies in less than two weeks since its release on June 10, 2026. Meanwhile, Meccha Chameleon's peak online count on Steam exceeded 340,500 people, placing the game at 44th among the most popular projects in the entire history of the Valve store.
- On June 19, the football action game Rematch celebrated its one-year anniversary. In honor of the game's birthday, its creators from Sloclap studio shared various statistics. Among other things, they revealed that over 7.5 million people have tried Rematch in the past year, collectively scoring 530 million goals. The top three countries with the most players were the USA, the UK, and Brazil, while Russia ranked sixth.
