Recent findings indicate that 'exergames' such as Nintendo's Ring Fit Adventure may aid in addressing early depressive symptoms.

The study, funded by China's Jilin Association of Higher Education and highlighted by VGC, explored whether these games could assist in treating 'subthreshold depression.' This refers to experiencing depression symptoms without meeting the full criteria for a major depressive disorder diagnosis.

Conducted with 84 adults affected by subthreshold depression, participants were divided equally. One faction played Ring Fit Adventure multiple times a week for just under an hour per session, while the counterpart group maintained their regular routines.

The results revealed that the gaming group showed noticeable reductions in depressive symptoms consistently over time, alongside significant enhancements in anxiety reduction and sleep quality.

The study concluded that exergaming using a Nintendo Switch is linked to improvements in mood, anxiety, and sleep quality for adults experiencing subthreshold depression.

This research combines effectiveness with participant feedback to expand on prior studies targeting different populations or outcomes, suggesting that commercially accessible exergames could act as engaging, readily available resources for early mental health intervention in community settings.

Previously, video games have been recognized for their potential in mental health management. Notably, in 2020, the FDA approved Akili Interactive's EndeavorRx for aiding ADHD management, citing improvements in attention.
