MGM and Amazon Game Studios have announced plans to publish upcoming James Bond titles from IO Interactive

Upcoming games in the James Bond franchise will be published by MGM and Amazon Game Studios, marking a shift from IO Interactive's previous role in publishing these titles.

IO Interactive was responsible for the development and release of 007: First Light, which debuted on May 27, quickly achieving impressive sales of 1.5 million copies in just the first day, according to reports.

The involvement of Amazon Game Studios in future Bond projects relates to its parent company Amazon's acquisition of MGM for $8.45 billion in 2022, as shared by Jeff Gattis, the studio's general manager, in a conversation with Polygon.

"Our acquisition of MGM happened after the initial deal for First Light," Gattis noted. Despite not being part of the game's creation, Amazon holds a stake due to its ownership of MGM, which aligns with its strategy to create transmedia content that spans gaming, films, and television.

Gattis highlighted opportunities to enrich and expand upon existing media properties, pointing to Amazon's plans for a new Tomb Raider series on Prime Video that would integrate with gaming experiences.

"We're exploring numerous projects connecting Prime Video and gaming IP, looking at original content opportunities," he added.

On the gaming front, Amazon Game Studios has witnessed some setbacks, such as the rumored cancellation of a Lord of the Rings MMO in May, which Gattis neither confirmed nor denied, while hinting at a developing "new game experience" in the same universe.

The company also discontinued Glowmade's multiplayer game King of Meat, due to it not meeting audience expectations.

Earlier in the year, Amazon revealed plans to terminate its MMO New World: Aeternum, with servers scheduled for shutdown by January 31, 2027. Development was halted in October 2025 amid Amazon's decision to streamline operations, impacting 14,000 positions.
