Zelnick: Take-Two remains confident that its online shooter, Project Ethos, has the potential to become a "massive hit" despite past high-profile setbacks
Take-Two Interactive's CEO Strauss Zelnick remains confident in the potential success of their revitalized online shooter, Project Ethos. Despite the industry's challenges, with even well-established companies like Bungie facing setbacks, Zelnick believes in the game's potential to become a "massive hit."
In a conversation with GamesIndustry.biz prior to announcing Take-Two's impressive annual financial figures, Zelnick noted that adjustments to Project Ethos were prompted by the feedback from its open beta, rather than external market pressures.
He acknowledged the game's "mixed response" and emphasized their commitment to enhancing the game's development. "We are focused on delivering an outstanding experience that our consumers will enjoy," said Zelnick, while mentioning there is still work ahead before the game's official release.
Zelnick further elaborated that Take-Two wouldn't engage in projects unless they believed they could achieve significant success, though he admitted that outcomes aren't always predictable.
Reflecting on recent accomplishments, he expressed pride in the year's achievements, including unanticipated successes. Take-Two's financial performance was boosted by notable titles such as NBA 2K, Zynga's mobile games, and robust results from GTA Online. Red Dead Redemption also performed exceptionally, selling 85 million units, marking its highest annual sales since launch. "The achievement is extraordinary," he noted.
Though he hinted at the potential ongoing success of Red Dead Online, Zelnick refrained from making announcements about expanding its revenue.
Regarding anticipated topics such as pricing for GTA 6, Zelnick confirmed marketing efforts would commence this summer. He also touched on the GTA+ subscription service and FiveM's server and mod offerings, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing user experience to drive revenue.
In an earnings call, Zelnick mentioned it would be too early to speculate on GTA 6's business model without an official announcement of its online version.
As for AI's increasing role in game development, Zelnick noted uncertainty about market perception but reiterated confidence in Take-Two's foundational strength.
Zelnick shared more detailed aspirations for Take-Two, expressing his vision to elevate it as the leading entertainment company globally, in an interview published by GamesIndustry.biz.
