"Veteran BioWare Developers Establish Studio Reset with a Focus on Sustainable Game Development"
A new game development entity, Studio Reset, has been launched in Canada by seasoned developers with backgrounds at BioWare, Inflexion Games, and Timbre Games.
Kaelin Lavallée, taking on the role of creative director and producer, along with design director Kris Schoneberg and art director Francis Lacuna, leverage their vast experience in AAA games for Studio Reset’s mission of pursuing original IP and sustainable practices while securing phased funding.
Backed by an initial investment from the Canada Media Fund (CMF), Studio Reset is among 31 selected for the Interactive Digital Media Prototyping initiative, focusing on its first project.
The studio was awarded CAN$250,000 to create a prototype, a critical step in attracting more investment and additional CMF production funding. This capital also fostered partnerships with other Canadian firms and creatives through paid collaborations.
According to an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, the founders admitted that the application process was intensive but helped them solidify plans around project scope, timelines, financial forecasts, market analysis, and revenue strategies.
Adopting a "smaller, more intentional" business model is central to Studio Reset's strategy for longevity. They are determined to avoid creating a studio that depends on producing blockbuster hits to thrive.
The creative process cultivated at BioWare, which balances vision and execution, is being adapted to craft unique and unconventional projects on a smaller scale.
The studio values the agility and enhanced communication within smaller teams, rejecting expansion in favor of maintaining focus and intentionality.
Honesty about game scale is key, crafting projects that align with current capabilities and ambitions, challenging the idea that size defines success.
Studio Reset's inaugural game is set in a neon-noir world, involving supernatural mysteries and centered on "Parallax Deduction," a gameplay design focused on perspective-driven mechanics.
The game's design eschews nonsensical puzzles, emphasizing solutions derived from discernible in-game hints.
The developers emphasize perspective, allowing players to interpret events and objects differently, adding depth to the mystery genre. Their interest lies in how players form interpretations from not entirely complete information, rather than providing a single, definitive narrative.
