Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro fail to meet the deadline for voluntarily recognizing the workers' union
Developers of Magic: The Gathering Arena, supported by the Communication Workers of America, have not yet received voluntary recognition of their union from Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, despite a request made by May 1.
In a statement released on May 4, the union pointed out the absence of a direct reply from the company to their appeal. They criticized management's response, which was only addressed in the media, despite the company's purported dedication to listening and valuing each employee.
Prior to this, on April 29, Wizards of the Coast acknowledged to Kotaku that they were examining the union's filing. They emphasized their commitment to creating a supportive and attentive workplace. The company stated, "We have received the filing and are reviewing it carefully," reaffirming the significant connection with their employees and the importance of direct relations to inspire enthusiasm for their games.
Expressing confidence in the union's future, UWOTC-CWA mentioned extensive encouragement from the community, including players and content creators. They urged continued pressure on Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro to acknowledge their union before the upcoming election organized by the National Labor Relations Board.
While disappointed at the delay, the union remains resolute and anticipates future discussions to improve conditions for workers and the community. Their initial letter to management addressed issues including layoff protections, remote work, generative AI concerns, mandatory overtime, and the necessity for better transparency and fairness.
