Epic Games and Disney have introduced their most extensive intellectual property toolset to date, enabling creators to develop Star Wars-themed games within Fortnite
Epic Games has teamed up with Disney to introduce a set of creative tools that empower fans to craft their own Star Wars-themed games within the Fortnite platform.
Using the Star Wars toolset, creators can generate themed environments within Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and Fortnite Creative or transform existing locations into Star Wars islands using UEFN.
This marks the most extensive IP toolset for Fortnite so far, incorporating numerous Star Wars templates, gameplay features, and a wide array of assets from characters to vehicles and weapons previously seen in Star Wars-themed Battle Royale seasons.
Among the new tools are options for customizing lightsabers and force powers in UEFN, along with updated user interface elements and fonts themed around Star Wars.
Four pre-built UEFN starter islands and two new Star Wars-themed flat grid islands in Fortnite Creative serve as templates. Additionally, Epic and Lucasfilm have introduced three new gaming experiences: Galactic Siege, Escape Vader, and Droid Tycoon, developed with various collaborators.
Future plans include adding features such as first-person weapon support, bespoke items, and inventories. Developers have the opportunity to release Star Wars-themed islands through the Creator Portal, with a dedicated collection page on Discover soon to be available.
To publish Star Wars content, developers need to register with the Fortnite Developer Program and agree to extra terms in the Creator Portal.
Those utilizing Star Wars assets are obligated to allocate 20% of their engagement earnings to The Walt Disney Company and adhere to the Star Wars Brand Rules.
Sean Shoptaw, Disney Games and Digital Entertainment executive VP, stated that interactive entertainment is shaping how stories are experienced, and Disney is embracing these changes fully.
He emphasized that gaming offers an unparalleled means to increase engagement, broaden universes, and interact with fans instantly, foreseeing a future where Disney storytelling is advanced through innovative, social, and contemporary gaming experiences.
In 2024, Disney invested $1.5 billion to obtain a stake in Epic Games, announcing intentions for a comprehensive, interconnected universe where users can engage with Disney content and characters in diverse formats.
