Atari has announced its acquisition of Implicit Conversions, a studio specializing in emulation technology
Atari has purchased the emulation company Implicit Conversions, although the transaction amount remains undisclosed.
Implicit Conversions is renowned for adapting vintage games for contemporary gaming systems through their unique emulation technology, which facilitates game adaptations without needing the original source code.
In a statement on their blog, the studio mentioned collaborations with Atari in the past year on projects like Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection and Rayman, and hinted at future projects through Digital Eclipse.
Following the acquisition, Bill Litshauer and Robin Lavallée, co-founders of Implicit Conversions, have taken on new leadership roles; Litshauer will lead operations and Lavallée will serve as the studio head.
According to the deal, Implicit Conversions will further support Atari in several ways.
Atari’s CEO, Wade Rosen, praised the studio's capability with games from the 32-bit era via their Syrup engine, noting it enhances Atari's existing skills with older games from the 8 and 16-bit eras. He stated that together with tools such as the Bakesale Engine from Digital Eclipse and the Kex Engine from Nightdive, Atari now has a robust collection of technological resources and talent to bolster its game development efforts.
Lavallée expressed that Implicit Conversions shares Atari's enthusiasm for classic games and the priority of accessibility in game preservation. He remarked on the significant opportunities available from the partnership, especially when combined with Atari’s substantial intellectual property and ongoing collaborations with major IP holders.
In March 2023, Atari completed the acquisition of Nightdive Studios, famous for developing Quake, for $10 million, integrating them as a subsidiary. Later that year, in October, Atari also acquired Digital Eclipse for $20 million, a company famed for retro game remastering, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection.
