The British Academy of Film and Television Arts described the eleventh-hour choice to remove an independent game's trailer from the 2026 BAFTA Games Awards as "a compliance decision"
The 2026 BAFTA Games Awards chose to remove a trailer for an indie game, explaining it was a "compliance decision."
On LinkedIn, developer Alyx Jones expressed frustration after being informed that the promotional video for "The Quiet Things" was withdrawn just before the nominee's gathering.
This game, classified as an autobiographical narrative venture, draws from the developer’s personal journals. The Steam platform indicates the game deals with intense themes such as self-harm, suicide, sexual assault, and childhood trauma.
Jones detailed her efforts, stating, "I spent the past two weeks crafting this trailer amidst severe burnout, believing it was an unparalleled chance for exposure. The potential for our modest game to be noticed by a substantial audience was exhilarating. It felt like a pivotal moment."
The notification indicated the trailer was excluded due to insufficient time to integrate necessary trigger warnings. Jones suggested prompt amendments, but her proposals were reportedly overlooked.
"It's disheartening not just because of the decision but because similar situations keep reoccurring where opportunities are lost due to potentially uncomfortable subject matter," Jones remarked. "I’ve maintained silence to preserve connections, accepted setbacks, and avoided conflicts. This situation frustrates me." Jones also attached the trailer in her LinkedIn post.
When contacted, BAFTA clarified: "The choice not to display a trailer for an unreleased title, which could include triggering issues, was for guest consideration, as we couldn't adequately notify attendees in advance.
"We support games that address challenging topics, but our priority was ensuring the comfort and safety of all attendees at our event."
At the recent BAFTA Awards, "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" and "Dispatch" emerged as winners, each securing three accolades. The complete list of winners is available here.
