TIGA: PC and console remain pivotal in driving game development in the UK

Recent statistics from TIGA indicate a shift in focus among UK games studios towards developing for PC, with less attention on mobile platforms.

Exclusive data provided to GamesIndustry.biz highlights that nearly half of the studios, about 46%, prioritize PC. Also, from May 2024 to September 2025, 56% of new ventures concentrated on PC development.

Meanwhile, the percentage of studios producing mobile games decreased slightly from 33% to 31.6%, with their portion of total industry employment dropping from 19% to 17.9%.

Employment in the console gaming segment rose, with its share increasing from 47.2% to 50% during the survey timeframe, though the number of employees in console studios diminished by 2.1%. This suggests more significant reductions in other areas.

TIGA CEO Richard Wilson commented, "PC and console game production continues to be a strong foundation for the growth of the UK games development industry."

He added that their findings emphasize PC as the dominant platform for both established and new UK studios. Simultaneously, even as the industry faces tough market challenges, console gaming remains a major employer.

Wilson further noted, "Such insights underscore the necessity of a supportive policy framework to encourage investment, expansion, and job creation in the UK games sector."

This sector’s resilience comes amid its “most severe downturn on record.”

Last month's figures from TIGA disclosed a net reduction of 1,537 development roles between May 2024 and September 2025, an annual decrease of 4.5%.

"After 14 years of continuous growth, the industry is now witnessing an alarming and rapid contraction," stated Wilson.

"Without strategic policy measures, the UK stands to lose numerous skilled positions and potentially fall behind more strongly supported global competitors."
