The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has achieved the highest-grossing debut in the United States for 2026

The film "Super Mario Galaxy" has set a new milestone by becoming the top-grossing US release for the year 2026.

Created through a collaboration between Universal's Illumination and Nintendo, the movie amassed $372.6 million globally and earned $190.8 million domestically within its first five days of screening. As reported by Deadline, it earned $34.5 million on its first day, outpacing The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $31.7 million.

With this performance, Galaxy becomes the sole animated series to have two films launching above the $350 million mark worldwide. In contrast, the Super Mario Bros. movie brought in $204.6 million in the US and $377 million globally during its premiere weekend.

The current film boasts the second-highest worldwide opening for a video game adaptation and ranks second among Illumination's releases, behind only Super Mario Bros.

According to NBCUniversal, "The Super Mario Galaxy movie's record-setting debut underscores the remarkable success of Nintendo and Illumination's collaboration in the realm of animated films."

"As audiences around the globe follow Mario, Peach, Yoshi, and other characters on their cosmic journey, the film is expected to maintain its box office appeal and cultural relevance in the coming weeks."

In September 2025, Nintendo announced the sequel to the original movie, with the first trailer premiering during a Nintendo Direct in November.
