The video game studio Eidos-Montréal, known for creating Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, is undergoing significant changes, including the reduction of its workforce by 124 employees. This restructuring also sees the departure of David Anfossi, the studio's lead, who exits the Embracer-owned company.
Information about these developments was disclosed via a LinkedIn post by Eidos-Montréal, attributing the changes to evolving project requirements and their effect on both production and support departments.
The statement expressed that it was a challenging moment for the studio, emphasizing the necessity to focus on areas where the company’s efforts are most productive. Eidos-Montréal conveyed its gratitude towards affected employees, stressing that the decision was not a reflection of their skills or performance but rather driven by current needs.
The announcement also mentioned Anfossi’s exit, acknowledging his contributions to the studio and outlining plans for leadership transition. Anfossi joined Eidos-Montréal in 2007, initially serving as a producer, and earlier worked at Ubisoft Montréal in a similar capacity.
This adjustment is the second in recent times at Eidos-Montréal. December saw the studio implement layoffs, amid reports that several projects had been discontinued. Currently, the studio is reportedly working on co-development projects like Microsoft's Grounded 2 and Fable. Their most recent full development was Guardians of the Galaxy, released in 2021.
In the past months, 75 staff were made redundant in March, and another 97 positions were eliminated in January 2024.
Eidos-Montréal became part of the Embracer Group in 2022, joining Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix Montréal in a $300 million acquisition. However, a year later, the company started restructuring after a planned $2 billion investment from Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games Group did not proceed, resulting in many layoffs, project terminations, and some studio closures.
