According to Nikkei, via Cover Geek, the company is adjusting to comply with the new EU regulations effective from 2023. These rules require that portable consoles sold in the European Union, including the Switch 2, have replaceable batteries by 2027.

If implemented, this would permit users to change the batteries in the console itself as well as in the Joy-Con 2 controllers.

Although Nintendo has yet to confirm this plan, GamesIndustry.biz has approached them for further details about the potential update.

Nikkei raised questions about what impact a new version of the Switch 2 might have on existing devices in Europe and on warranty policies. There is also the possibility that similar changes could be introduced in Japan and the US should legal requirements change.

The 2023 EU legislation mandates that batteries in portable consoles and other similar products be both accessible and replaceable for consumers. The guidelines specify that users should be able to change batteries with either commonly available or specialized tools, supplemented by company-provided instructions and safety advice.

In addition, the EU has set ambitious targets for battery waste collection, requiring manufacturers to achieve a rate of 63% by the end of 2027 and 73% by 2030.
