Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, addressed criticism regarding DLSS 5, a new upscaling technology, stating that the skepticism is unfounded and emphasizing that it does not impact artistic direction.

This week, Nvidia introduced DLSS 5, which it described as a groundbreaking development in game visuals powered by artificial intelligence and "neural rendering."

The technology has garnered support from major developers such as Bethesda, Capcom, NetEase, NCSoft, Tencent, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros Games, which have demonstrated its capabilities in a technical showcase.

Despite its innovative promises, DLSS 5 faced significant backlash, with detractors arguing that it imposes an artificial layer on character design, thus limiting creative freedom. One example of such criticism was a comparison featuring Grace from Resident Evil: Requiem, which was met with disapproval.

In response to these concerns during the company's annual conference, Huang was questioned by Tom's Hardware.

"Their perspective is entirely mistaken," remarked Huang. "As elaborated earlier, DLSS 5 integrates the manipulation of game geometry and textures with generative AI, allowing developers to align it with their artistic intentions." He further emphasized that this innovation "maintains creative control" for game developers.

Huang explained that unlike post-processing methods, DLSS 5 provides generative control at the structural level, granting game developers direct influence over the process. "This sets it apart from traditional generative AI by being content-focused and hence termed neural rendering," Huang concluded.
