Shinji Mikami launches a new AAA game development studio named Unbound
Shinji Mikami, a noted figure in the gaming industry, has launched a fresh AAA studio named Unbound.
As reported by VGC, the Unbound website has been operational for over a year but has only recently gained wider attention. Mikami established Unbound in 2022, with its activities commencing in 2023.
The studio is positioned as a "fully independent company" dedicated to producing AAA and original games for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms.
Currently employing about 50 individuals, Unbound has plans to expand to 150 employees. Among the team is Masato Kimura, a frequent partner of Mikami, known for his contributions to Resident Evil and Devil May Cry.
Kimura expressed that Unbound is targeting "AAA quality and AA content," intending to provide an engaging gaming adventure that fully immerses players.
He elaborated, "Creating something original involves continuous trial and error, implementing and revising, adjusting, and sometimes removing elements. This process involves building and dismantling, experimenting in different ways, which can lead to constant changes and unforeseen developments.
This dynamic and adaptable approach requires programmers who can endure such a creative process, and we seek individuals who thrive in this environment to be part of our team."
Unbound isn't Mikami's sole venture since his departure from Tango Gameworks in February 2023.
In 2024, he established Kamuy, which was revealed when the game's creator section on the Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered website listed Mikami as the founder.
