The recently released Slay the Spire 2 by Mega Crit has rapidly gained traction, reaching a peak of 574,638 concurrent players as of Sunday, as reported by SteamDB. This impressive figure nearly matches the record held by Hollow Knight: Silksong in 2025, which peaked at 587,150 players.

Following its launch on March 5 in Steam Early Access, this deck-building game has sold approximately 2.8 million copies. These sales have translated into an estimated $55.1 million in revenue, according to data from Video Game Insights (VGI). Notably, the game is still featured on about 2.4 million Steam wishlists.

The original Slay the Spire managed to sell over 1.5 million units on Steam from its Early Access introduction in 2017 until March 2019. The full release was in January 2019. Additionally, the game expanded to consoles and mobile platforms, with Balor Games acquiring the console version publishing rights recently.

Historically, the first game saw a significant portion of its sales stemming from China, around 43%, a trend echoed by its sequel. VGI data shows that 43% of Slay the Spire 2's players are in China, with a total of 51% from Asia. In contrast, about 25% of the player base is located in North America and 19% in Europe.

For the development of Slay the Spire 2, Mega Crit transitioned to the Godot engine. This move followed a public disagreement with Unity's Runtime Fee policy in 2023. Emilio Coppola, executive director at the Godot Foundation, noted last year that the Godot engine has significantly risen in popularity since the Unity controversy.
