Highguard, a creation of Wildlight Entertainment, will cease operations on March 12, 2026, due to its inability to maintain a viable player population. The studio announced via social media that a final update will be rolled out before the game’s servers are shut down.

The statement acknowledged the involvement of over two million players since Highguard's debut, highlighting their feedback, content creation, and support. Wildlight expressed their gratitude, though they admitted that despite the dedication of their team, sustaining a long-term player base had been unsuccessful.

Recently, reports have emerged indicating that fewer than 20 employees remain at Wildlight following layoffs which took place last month.

Sources suggested that funding for the studio, purportedly provided by Tencent's TiMi Studio Group, depended on meeting specific benchmarks, such as player retention, which were not met.

Highguard was unveiled at The Game Awards in December to mixed reviews and launched on January 26 with minimal marketing, inspired by the surprise release of Apex Legends in 2019.

Wildlight Entertainment was established by ex-Respawn Entertainment developers, with CEO Dusty Welch having previously served as COO and GM of Apex. Creative director James McCord commented on the communication strategy, emphasizing the importance of gameplay, saying, "The plan was to announce, go dark, and then the next thing that we want players to see is the game."
