Sony has closed Bluepoint Games, the remake specialist known for co-developing God of War Ragnarok.
Sony is set to close Bluepoint Games, the studio infamous for delivering remarkable remasters such as Demon's Souls, Shadow of the Colossus, and Uncharted. The closure, affecting 70 employees, is planned for next month, according to Bloomberg.
The company explained to Bloomberg that the shutdown comes after "a recent business review." Sony had integrated Bluepoint into its operations in 2021, after years of partnership on successful remakes of critical first-party properties like Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, God of War Collection, and The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection.
Playstation Studios head Hermen Hulst, in an email later shared on Resetera, stated the closure was a difficult decision driven by a "challenging industry environment" that includes increased development costs, slower industry growth, shifts in player preferences, and economic challenges.
Hulst emphasized Bluepoint's technical prowess and the enduring quality of its contributions to the PlayStation community, adding that efforts would be made to assist affected staff in finding roles within Sony's broader studio network.
Despite the disheartening news, Hermen expressed confidence in PlayStation Studios' future, underscoring commitments to creativity and innovation, and pointing to a solid strategy for FY26.
Having co-developed the 2022 release God of War Ragnarok, Bluepoint had been involved in creating a live service project that was later canceled in January 2025. This move is part of Sony's strategic reduction in live service ventures initiated under Jim Ryan's leadership as outlined here.
Bloomberg had previously relayed Sony’s view of Bluepoint as an "esteemed team" and integral to the PlayStation Studios, committed to collaborating on future endeavors before the recent developments.
